On a New Moon, the sun is behind the moon and when they are aligned you see a solar eclipse.

On a Full Moon, the sun is behind the earth and when they are aligned you see a lunar eclipse.

On a First Quarter, the sun is to the west when the moon is at its apex. At midnight, the moon will be well set and will rise soon after midnight.

On a Last Quarter, the sun is to the east when the moon is at its apex. At midnight, the moon will be approaching moonrise and will set just before noon.

The bright side of the moon always faces the sun.
